The NZ Human Right Commission

The Human Rights Commission’s first media committee ...

Re-launched the Commission’s national brand profile.

John Cranna established the Human Right Commission’s first media committee, tasked with raising the public profile of the Commission, publicizing a variety of pressing human rights issues throughout NZ, and providing greater transparency for the Commission’s complaints work. In response to a brief from the Chief Human Rights Commissioner, he also re-launched the Commission's 'look and feel', or corporate visual identity.

He was also responsible for publication of mass circulation pamphlets explaining the provisions of the Human Rights Act 1973 in plain English. The Act was a major and innovative piece of human rights legislation, that lead the way in the Western world in terms of its scope and reach.

John Cranna coordinated the translation of human rights brochures into a variety of languages, targeted at immigrant groups in NZ, and distributed tens of thousands of the Commissions brochures to a variety of community groups, government agencies, and to the general public.

He managed publication of the Commission monthly newsletter Tirohia, and helped significantly improve the understanding of the extensive anti-discriminatory provisions of the Human Rights Act throughout New Zealand.
